Bringing the Past to Life in Billings
In the heart of Billings lies a historical gem, the Coulson “Boothill” Cemetery – a site that echoes the tales of the Old West and early days of Montana. Our Montana is proud to be part of an inspiring community effort to restore and improve this significant historical site.
A Community Effort for Preservation
Led by Dave Wanzenried and backed by a group of dedicated community members, this initiative is a testament to the collective spirit of preserving our heritage. The project aims not only to refurbish the cemetery but also to create an engaging and informative experience for visitors and future generations.
About Coulson ‘Boothill’ Cemetery
Coulson Cemetery, more commonly known as Boothill, served as a burial ground from 1877 to 1882. The cemetery got its nickname from the manner in which many interred there met their end – often with their boots on. From those fallen in battle to the victims of sudden tragedies, each grave tells a unique story of the early days of Coulson and Billings.
The Vision for Restoration
Recent studies have uncovered that the cemetery houses approximately 150 graves, significantly more than previously thought. The renovation plans include durable and respectful commemoration of these sites, along with the installation of interactive technology and educational signage. QR codes on these panels will link to in-depth historical information, offering a modern approach to learning about the past.
Join the Effort
The total cost of the project is estimated at around $45,000, with a substantial amount already raised through community donations. To see this project to fruition, further support is needed. We invite you to be a part of this significant effort to preserve a crucial piece of Montana’s history.
How to Contribute
To support the Coulson “Boothill” Cemetery restoration project, donations can be made online at Billings Community Foundation or by contacting Dave Wanzenried directly. Every contribution helps in preserving the stories of our past.
