Back to the Future with Lewis & Clark
Technology Then and Now
Back to the Future with Lewis & Clark was a one-of-a-kind, award-winning educational event organized by Our Montana board member John Pulasky. Beginning in 2006, the program was designed as a “Lewis & Clark college for kids,” bringing more than 10,000 seventh-grade students from south-central Montana together for an immersive, week-long learning experience.
Held annually at MSU Billings City College, the event featured rotating classroom modules that explored how members of the Lewis & Clark Expedition performed daily tasks — and how those same tasks are accomplished today. Topics included mapping and GPS, blacksmithing, Native American culture, flora and fauna, weather, medical practices, and the role of the bison on the Northern Plains.
Although the event is no longer active, it remains an important part of Our Montana’s legacy of hands-on education, historical interpretation, and community engagement.
